Career in Agricultural Biotechnology

Introduction

Biotechnology is a practical method which involves living organisms or their bodies to build or alter a product for a practical purpose. It can be employed to any classes of organism i.e animals, plants, viruses or bacteria. The scientist utilizes advanced agricultural biotechnology which includes a wide range of tools to see and manipulate the organisms genetic for the purpose of production or working of agricultural products. Biotechnology is a science which includes different subjects like Chemistry, Mathematics, and Engineering. This field also includes subjects like Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Health and Medicine, Ecology, Cell Biology and Marine Biology etc.

Biotechnology determine application program in 4 important industrial areas such as health care, crop production and agriculture, non food (industrial) uses of crops,  and biodegradable products and environmental uses. It is regarded as one of the quickest developing and predicting field which is progressing through research and development.

In India, the education in Biotechnology is no less promoting. Owing to its wide application in various industries, the demand for trained professionals has also increased. Realizing its academic importance, some of the institutes and universities in the country have started offering a plethora of courses for the younger generations. The courses are offered mainly at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Nature of Work:

The nature of work for Bio technologists is in different sectors like agriculture, pharmaceuticals, medicine, and environment. Bio technologists work in independent areas is provides with research goods which includes following industries products: health care, biochemical, food, drinks, agriculture, metals.

Bio technologist’s work in research which is concerned with medical and health care. The application program of biotechnology includes research in Pharmaceutical, new vaccines development, and diagnostic procedures. In agricultural biotechnology, the bio technologists work for the betterment of crops, animals and trees through various propagation techniques. The growth of biochemicals, bio insecticides, and tissue culture has almost overturned agriculture sciences.

Bio technologists mostly do scientific research work in laboratories. The job however demands working with several fields of science. However in private laboratories, mostly fitted with state of art technologies, the working atmosphere may be considerably comfortable.

 Career Prospects

The scope of biotechnology in India is also tremendous. This field includes engineers, biologists, and many other such professionals. The areas where biotechnology has grown in India include Bioinformatics, Agricultural biotechnology, Bio fertilizers, National Bioresearch Development, Plant Biology. A biotechnologist may find jobs in various sectors. In India Students can mainly explore job options in the following fields:

  • Business development manager
  • Research associate
  • Drug and pharmaceutical research
  • Research scientist
  • Chemicals
  • Energy
  • Food processing
  • Bio-processing industries
  • Lab technician
  • Waste management
  • Sales Marketing

Educational Qualifications

The educational qualification for doing  course in biotechnology is that one  must have a background in science, that is Physics or agriculture, chemistry and biology .In India, some universities offer the B.Sc biotechnology which one can join after class 12 or equivalent examination, with physics, chemistry and mathematics
